Summary Large scale purification of endothelial cells is of great interest as it could improve tissue transplantation, reperfusion of ischemic tissues and treatment of pathologies in which an endothelial cell dysfunction exists. In this study, we describe a novel genetic approach that selects for endothelial cells from differentiating embryonic stem ES ; cells. Our strategy is based on the establishment of ES-cell clones that carry an integrated puromycin resistance gene under the control of a vascular endothelium-specific promoter, tie-1. Using EGFP as a reporter gene, we first confirmed the endothelial specificity of the tie-1 promoter in the embryoid body model and in cells differentiated in 2D cultures. Subsequently, tie-1EGFP ES cells were used as recipients for the tie-1-driven puror transgene. The resulting stable clones were expanded and differentiated for seven days in the presence of VEGF before puromycin selection. As expected, puromycinresistant cells were positive for EGFP and also expressed several endothelial markers, including CD31, CD34, VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, Tie-1, VE-cadherin and ICAM-2. Release from the puromycin selection resulted in the appearance of -smooth muscle actin-positive cells. Such cells became more numerous when the population was cultured on laminin-1 or in the presence of TGF-1, two known inducers of smooth muscle cell differentiation. The hypothesis that endothelial cells or their progenitors may differentiate towards a smooth muscle cell phenotype was further supported by the presence of cells expressing both CD31 and -smooth muscle actin markers. Finally, we show that purified endothelial cells can incorporate into the neovasculature of transplanted tumors in nude mice. Taken together, these results suggest that application of endothelial lineage selection to differentiating ES cells may become a useful approach for future pro-angiogenic and endothelial cell replacement therapies and zidovudine.

Workshop W6. State-of-the-Art of the Pesticide European Revision: Council Directive 91 414 program of plant protection products ppp's ; is required. In the first round of evaluation, Mediterranean countries evaluated 37 of the 90 active substances and their respective formulations. Until now, 10 of the 25 compounds, listed in Annex I to the Directive, were evaluated by Mediterranean countries Doc. 3010 12- 2002 ; . For the second round of evaluation, 63 complete dossiers have been submitted, 12 of them are allocated to the Mediterranean countries for evaluation. In addition to the above, 96 actives, not notified, are scheduled to be out of the market in July 2003. The evaluation according to the Article 5 of Directive 91 414 EEC, focuses on the ppp's safety for the human health and the environment. The main part of safety evaluation is the risk assessment for the workers operators and re-entry workers ; and for the consumers of the agricultural products where residues of ppp's may be present. The risk assessment requires both the hazard identification and the estimation of the degree of exposure. Although the strategy for hazard identification has to follow a uniform and harmonized approach among M.S., the strategy for the exposure assessment may differ significantly between North European and Mediterranean countries for both the workers and the consumers. Differences in climatic conditions, plant protection needs and practices, due to the variety of crops and pests and differences in food consumption, influence the levels of exposure. The current approach limitations, for the assessment of operator exposure and the Mediterranean countries' contribution to the establishment of a more representative and reliable database, for the Southern Europe, will be presented. For the consumer's risk assessment the identified shortcomings and recommendations for their avoidance will be presented as well. The potential rise of plant protection problems, in Mediterranean countries, due to the withdrawal from the market of a wide range of plant protection products, will be discussed. 79.

Which brings us again to human cloning, in my mind the least interesting application. Once the technology is perfected which is not the case today ; , I see neither the acute ethical dilemmas nor the profound promise that ethicists and enthusiasts have debated. So we'll have genetic twins separated by one or more generations: it's the sort of idea society absorbs in its sleep. It's far different from mental cloning in which a person's entire personality, memory, skills, and history will ultimately be downloaded into a different, and most likely more powerful, thinking medium. There's no issue of philosophical identity with genetic cloning-genetic clones are different people, even more so than conventional twins today. But if we consider the full concept of cloning from cell to organisms, the benefits have enormous synergy with the other revolutions occurring in biology as well as in computer technology. As we learn to understand the genome of both humans and animals, and as we develop powerful new means of harnessing genetic information, cloning provides the means to replicate animals, organs, and cells. And that has profound implications for health and well-being, of both ourselves and our evolutionary cousins in the animal kingdom.

Exception: Individuals taking a generic version of Clozail must apply. ; The above enrollees do not need to apply for any patient assistance program. PDP will continue to cover all drugs normally paid for by PDP. Example: Alice is enrolled in PDP only. She currently uses three prescription medications, Drug A, Drug B, and Drug C, to help treat her high blood pressure. One of these medications, Drug A, is fully covered by a patient assistance program offered through a drug manufacturer. Alice applies for the assistance program and is eligible. Because she can now receive Drug A at no cost through the assistance program, PDP will no longer pay for Drug A. However, PDP will continue to pay for Drug B and Drug C since they are not covered by an assistance program. A few months after signing up for the assistance program, Alice has a change in circumstances and also becomes eligible for MA with a spenddown. PDP will now cover Drug A if Alice chooses to receive Drug A through PDP rather than the assistance program Example: Roberto is enrolled in PDP only. He uses Drug X which is a generic version of the drug, Zantac. An assistance program offered through a drug manufacturer would provide Zantac to Roberto at no cost. Roberto is not required to sign up for the assistance plan because he is taking a generic drug. PDP will continue to pay for Drug X. C. Implementation Required Action 1. The Department of Human Services All current PDP enrollees who need to apply for patient assistance programs through RxConnectTM need to do so before January 1, 2004, to ensure that payment for prescriptions will continue uninterrupted. Starting October 1, 2003, DHS will refer all affected current PDP enrollees to RxConnectTM. DHS will send a notice to PDP enrollees excluding those who are also on MA with a spenddown ; .
